Stag Beetle, Dorcus mirabilis (Parry, 1864) – of Sarawak / Borneo around 1060m ASL
Adults primarily take liquid carbohydrates, typically tree sap and other sugary exudates, and are most active from dusk through the night; they are often encountered at sap flows and may be attracted to lights. As in many Dorcus, males use their mandibles in intrasexual contests over access to feeding sites or mates, while females invest in oviposition within suitably rotted wood. Given this life-history strategy, the species is expected to depend on structurally diverse, dead-wood–rich forest microhabitats, making the continuity of standing and downed dead wood a likely prerequisite for stable populations.
