Lobb’s bulbophyllum, Bulbophyllum lobbii Lindl. (1847) – of Sarawak/Borneo – around 1320m ASL.

Bulbophyllum lobbii Lindl. (Orchidaceae) is an epiphytic species of sect. Sestochilus, distributed from NE India, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines in lowland–montane forests. Plants bear discrete pseudobulbs, each with a single coriaceous, apical leaf; the inflorescence is 1-flowered and produces large (≈8–10 cm), relatively long-lived, often fragrant flowers with a hinged, pendulous labellum. The labellum acts as a mechanical trigger in pollination; within Sestochilus, male Dacini fruit flies (Bactrocera, Zeugodacus) function as principal pollinators, attracted by phenylpropanoid/ketone semiochemicals. The species was described by J. Lindley in 1847; recognized infraspecific variation includes subsp. lobbii, subsp. siamense, among others.
