Licuala grandis (hort. ex W. Bull) H. Wendl. of Sarawak/Borneo – around 600m ASL.

Licuala grandis is a species of palm tree in the Arecaceae family. The currently accepted name was published in L’Illustration Horticole in 1880; Pritchardia grandis T.Moore (1874) is listed as a homotypic synonym (basionym). Morphologically, it is described, among other things, by its very characteristic, circular, undivided and distinctly folded leaves with notched tips; the inflorescence appears between the leaves and the flowers are hermaphroditic; the initially green, roundish, ‘marble-like’ fruits turn red when ripe and each contain one seed.

Etymologically, the genus name Licuala is explained as a Latinisation of the Makassar/Moluccan folk name “leko wala” (for Licuala palms); the species epithet grandis is Latin and means, among other things, “large/tall, stately”.
