Schoenorchis buddleiflora, (Schltr. & J.J.Sm.) J.J.Sm. 1912 (Kew) – of Sarawak/Borneo – around 1010m ASL.
Schoenorchis buddleiflora is a species of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It was published by Johannes Jacobus Smith in the journal Natuurk. Tijdschr. Ned.-Indië, volume 72, page 100 (year 1912; partly with the note that printing or publication took place in that year) under the name Schoenorchis buddleiflora; Saccolabium buddleiflorum Schltr. & J.J.Sm. from 1908 is considered the homotypic synonym (basionym). According to the standard taxonomic database Plants of the World Online (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), the species is native to its natural range in Borneo (north and north-west Borneo) and Sumatra (west Sumatra) and grows epiphytically, occurring mainly in humid tropical habitats. The genus Schoenorchis comprises small, epiphytic, monopodial orchids with fleshy, flat to (sub-)terete leaves and mostly multi-flowered, axillary inflorescences; the flowers are small, fleshy, usually do not open wide, and the lip is firmly attached to the base of the column and typically bears a spur. The genus name Schoenorchis is derived from the Greek schoenos (‘rush’) and orchis (‘orchid’) and refers to the reed-like, terete leaves of the type. The species epithet buddleiflora is etymologically explained as an allusion to ‘Buddleia-like flowers’ or ‘Buddle’s flower’ (to the form buddleiflorum).
