Male of Orthonecroscia pulcherrima Kirby, 1904 – of Sarawak / Borneo – around 1000m ASL
Orthonecroscia pulcherrima is a species of stick insect (order Phasmida) from the Borneo region and is classified in the Phasmida Species File in the family Lonchodidae (subfamily Necrosciinae; tribe Necrosciini). The species was described in 1904 by William Forsell Kirby; a female from the collection of the Natural History Museum in London is listed as the type specimen. Published evidence for Sarawak includes specimens from Mount Serapi (Kubah National Park). In a revision, Ocellata atrosignata and Ocellata tessellata (both originally described in 1908) were also treated as synonyms of Orthonecroscia pulcherrima; it is also reported that type material from Budapest was lost in a museum fire in 1956.
The species epithet pulcherrima is the feminine form of the Latin superlative pulcherrimus to pulcher and means ‘very beautiful’ or ‘the most beautiful’.
