Kinabalu mountain banana, Musa monticola M.Hotta ex Argent – of Sabah/Borneo – around 1620m ASL.

Musa monticola is a wild banana endemic to the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo, where it is confined to montane habitats around Mount Kinabalu and the Crocker Range and occurs in lower montane rain forest clearings and secondary vegetation. Early molecular analyses using amplified fragment length polymorphism supported affinity with the former section Australimusa, and subsequent taxonomic revisions merged Australimusa and Ingentimusa into an expanded Callimusa, so the species is now treated in section Callimusa. The specific epithet monticola derives from Latin and means mountain dweller, aptly reflecting the species ecological niche.
