Asian litter frog, Leptobrachium gunungense Malkmus, 1996 – of Sabah / Borneo

Leptobrachium gunungense is a montane litter frog of the family Megophryidae that is endemic to the higher elevations of Mount Kinabalu in Sabah on northern Borneo where it occupies wet forest near streams between roughly 1750 and 2200 meters. It was described from Sungei Carson at 1850 meters as L. gunungensis and the spelling was later adjusted to gunungense for gender agreement. Bioacoustic characters separate it from the closely related L. montanum while external morphology is very similar and the belly lacks the bold black and white mottling typical of L. abbotti. The specific epithet alludes to the mountain setting of the type locality and combines the Malay word gunung for mountain with the Latin adjectival suffix ensis which denotes origin from a place.
