Adult katydid that has not yet been identified, Scambophyllum sp. – Borneo/Sarawak 1200m ASL
The genus Scambophyllum belongs to the bush crickets (katydids) and is listed in the Orthoptera Species File within the Phaneropterinae (tribus Scambophyllini). It was established by Carl Brunner von Wattenwyl in 1878; Phylloptera sanguinolenta Westwood, 1848 (type species due to original monotypy) is named as the type species. The Orthoptera Species File lists seven recent, valid species for Scambophyllum. For Borneo, the genus is documented by type material, among other things: Scambophyllum albomarginatum was specified with a holotype from Labuan, and Scambophyllum sandakanae with a holotype from Sandakan (Sabah). In overviews, the distribution of the genus is mainly located in Indochina and Malesia. Bioacoustic data is available for the behavior of individual species; for Scambophyllum sanguinolentum, a call consisting of temporally isolated pulse trains has been described. Only a few explicitly documented observations have been published on their diet; for S. sanguinolentum, feeding on Clidemia hirta has been mentioned.
