Spilarctia groganae (Holloway, 1976) – Sarawak / Borneo – around 1000m ASL

Spilarctia groganae (sometimes placed in Spilosoma) is a moth of the family Erebidae, first described by J. D. Holloway in 1976. It is well known from northern Borneo, with records from Mount Kinabalu and Mount Mulu. The species is considered uncommon and has been collected in montane habitats between roughly 1,000 and 1,930 meters above sea level. These environments are characterized by cooler, moist conditions compared to lowland rainforest, and many tiger moths in this region show restricted elevational ranges. Although detailed ecological or life history data are lacking for S. groganae, its occurrence in montane forest suggests adaptation to specialized niches within Borneo’s diverse moth fauna.
